A Guide to Longevity: Biohacking, Biological Age and Research from Around the World

What does biological age mean? Why are scientists studying mitochondria, autophagy and senescent cells? And how can we distinguish an interesting discovery from a promise that does not yet have enough evidence?

This series explores ageing and longevity research in clear language and context. We look at cellular processes, nutrition, physical activity and new approaches being investigated in clinical trials.

For each topic, we distinguish between observations in cells or animals, findings from human studies and questions that remain unanswered. This guide introduces our core series of 12 articles and future research updates.

Longevity: more years of health, strength and independence

The aim is to preserve mobility, memory, physical ability and independence for as long as possible. We are interested in how people manage everyday life, what brings them joy and how their health changes over time.

What is biological age? It is an estimate of the age that the condition of the body corresponds to, based on selected measurements. We count age in years from birth. Biological age can be estimated from blood results, physical abilities or chemical marks on DNA. Different tests examine different aspects of ageing, so they may not give the same number. Article 01 explains this in more detail.

We can begin with everyday steps: physical activity suited to our health, maintaining muscle strength, a varied diet, good sleep and not smoking. This also includes paying attention to blood pressure, blood sugar and blood fats, and discussing abnormal results with a doctor. We do not need a biological age test to take the first steps.

What will you find in this series?

Clear explanations of key concepts. We put biological age, epigenetics, mitochondria and cellular recycling into context to help you navigate articles and news about longevity.

A closer look at the evidence. When discussing studies, we explain who was studied, what was measured, how long the research lasted and what its limitations are.

Research updates from around the world. We will gradually add new findings to the core series. Updates will include a date and links to the relevant sources.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this guide for?

Anyone who wants to understand longevity and biohacking research. No specialist background is needed: we explain concepts step by step and connect them to specific research questions.

Do I need to read the articles in order?

No. Each article covers a separate topic. If you are new to the subject, we suggest starting with article 01 on biological age, followed by article 02 on cellular ageing. You can then explore other topics using the menu.

Will I find a rejuvenation plan or advice on taking supplements?

This series explains research and its limitations. It does not provide personalised treatment plans, dosing protocols or recommendations for specific products. Mentioning a substance being studied is not a recommendation to take it.

Where can I find the scientific sources?

Links to studies and scientific sources appear in the individual articles. When explaining them, we distinguish between laboratory findings, animal research and human studies.

Will more articles be added?

Yes. The core series contains 12 articles. Further topics and discussions of research from around the world will follow, explaining what the findings contribute and which questions remain open.

Final thoughts: ask what a finding really means

When reading longevity news, look beyond the headline: who was studied, what changed and whether the researchers also assessed health outcomes. These questions will guide our entire series.

Let us begin with biological age, a term frequently used in test offers and news about rejuvenation. The first article explores what these measurements represent and how to interpret their results.
