Bovine Collagen: What Did Two Placebo-Controlled Clinical Studies Investigate?

Two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies investigated 10 g of hydrolyzed bovine CollaSel PRO® collagen peptide per day: one examined skin measurements and the other adults with osteoarthritis. Published findings concern the specific tested peptide, not every finished Swedish Nutra formulation.

Tested peptide versus finished products. The publications studied CollaSel PRO® peptide under specific trial conditions. The manufacturer's summary associates it with its Bovine Collagen line, but the trials did not independently test the complete finished formulation. Their findings should not automatically be attributed to a marketed supplement.
01Two studies, one collagen peptide

01997 · NCT05235997 · Skin

120 women enrolled, 112 completed, aged 35–57. Outcomes included skin hydration, elasticity and roughness.

01998 · NCT05369780 · Joints

160 adults enrolled, 159 completed, aged 45–60. Outcomes included WOMAC and AOFAS-AHFS scores.

Methods: randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 1:1 allocation; 10 g hydrolyzed collagen peptide per day versus placebo.
02Methods of the skin study

The skin study assessed measurements of skin parameters during supplementation with the CollaSel PRO® peptide. Numerical results and their interpretation can be reviewed in the original published paper linked in the sources section.

These results do not establish the effects of the complete finished Swedish Nutra formulation.

03Methods of the joint study

The second published paper describes a clinical study of the CollaSel PRO® peptide in adults with osteoarthritis. Outcome scores and the researchers’ conclusions are available in the original publication. They should not be used as evidence of efficacy for a different finished product.

04What outcomes were investigated?

Measured or assessed

Skin: hydration, elasticity and roughness.
Joints: symptoms including discomfort and stiffness, and physical function.

Not endpoints of these trials

Hair, nails and digestion were not endpoints of studies 01997 and 01998.

05What did these studies not test?

Neither trial separately established the effectiveness of the complete Swedish Nutra Bovine Collagen supplement or any other finished multi-ingredient formulation.

For any marketed product, its own composition, serving amount, instructions for use and permitted claims must be evaluated separately.

06Manufacturing and quality

According to the manufacturer's documentation, Swedish Nutra AB develops and manufactures liquid food supplements at its facilities in Malmö, Sweden. That documentation refers to GMP, HACCP and ISO 22000:2018.

These manufacturing statements describe the manufacturer and should not be confused with clinical evidence for the effectiveness of any finished supplement.

07Safety and tolerability

The study summaries report no serious adverse events. The tested daily dose of 10 g hydrolyzed collagen peptide was described as well tolerated during the study period. Reported events included nausea, headache and constipation.

Short-term tolerability in selected trial participants does not guarantee that a supplement is suitable or risk-free for everyone.
08Frequently asked questions
Are Swedish Nutra and Swedish Collagen the same company?

Swedish Collagen is a brand of Swedish Nutra AB.

Was the finished bovine collagen supplement tested directly?

No. The trials investigated a specific CollaSel PRO® peptide containing collagen types I and III, not the complete Swedish Nutra Bovine Collagen finished product.

What daily quantity was used?

10 g (10,000 mg) of the hydrolyzed collagen peptide per day.

Were these placebo-controlled studies?

Yes. Both trials were randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled.
