Collagen and Blood Vessels: Vessel Wall, Endothelium and Elasticity

Collagen is important not only for the skin, bones and joints. It is also found in blood vessel walls, where it provides mechanical support. Together with elastin, it helps determine the strength and elasticity of the vessel wall.

01How is the blood vessel wall structured?
Tunica intima – inner layer

Contains the endothelium, a thin layer of cells lining the inside of blood vessels.

Tunica media – middle layer

Contains smooth muscle cells and elastic structures that help regulate vessel diameter.

Tunica adventitia – outer layer

Connective tissue containing collagen provides mechanical support to the vessel.

Collagen is found in several layers of the vessel wall, not just its outer surface.

02Collagen and elastin: strength and elasticity
Collagen Elastin
Provides strength and limits excessive stretching of the vessel. Allows elastic stretching and a return towards the original shape.
Balance matters: excessive collagen deposition or changes in elastin can increase arterial stiffness.
03What is the endothelium?

The endothelium is a layer of cells lining the inner surface of blood and lymphatic vessels. It helps regulate vessel dilation and constriction, blood clotting, the passage of substances and inflammatory responses. Beneath it is a basement membrane that contains type IV collagen.

04What affects blood vessel elasticity?

Vessel elasticity changes with age and is associated with collagen, elastin, blood pressure and metabolic processes. Regular physical activity, not smoking, a balanced diet and monitoring blood pressure are important aspects of cardiovascular care.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels.

05Collagen supplements and blood vessels

Collagen consumed in food is digested into smaller peptides and amino acids. Small studies have examined certain measures of vascular stiffness, but current evidence is insufficient to claim that collagen supplements restore blood vessel elasticity, repair the endothelium or prevent cardiovascular disease.

06Conclusion and sources

Collagen contributes to the mechanical stability of blood vessels. Elastin supports elasticity, while the endothelium regulates important vascular functions. However, the biological role of collagen does not in itself demonstrate the effectiveness of supplements.
