What Is Elastin? Skin Elasticity and How It Differs from Collagen
What is elastin: skin elasticity and how it differs from collagen
Elastin helps tissues stretch and return to their original shape. Explore its role in skin and why it is not interchangeable with collagen.

What is elastin and where is it found?
Elastin is a connective tissue protein. It is the main component of elastic fibres, which allow tissue to respond elastically to stretching. In the skin, it is found in the dermis.
It is also important in the lungs, large blood vessels and certain ligaments. Its role therefore extends beyond skin appearance.

What is the difference between elastin and collagen?
| Comparison | Elastin | Collagen |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Stretching and elastic recoil. | Tissue strength, support and resistance. |
| Role in skin | Part of elastic fibres. | Part of its structural support. |
| Relationship | Complements collagen. | Does not replace elastin. |

↑ Back to contentsWhy does the quality of elastic fibres matter?
Skin elasticity depends on more than the amount of elastin. The arrangement of elastic fibres and their connections with other skin structures also matter.
A 2021 review describes very slow elastin turnover and declining production after adulthood. The fibres are also exposed to damage. Changes in elasticity are therefore not a simple problem explained by the absence of a single ingredient.

↑ Back to contentsWhat does elastin on a product label mean?
| Where it is mentioned | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| In a description of skin | A natural protein and component of elastic fibres. |
| In cosmetic ingredients | An ingredient in a finished formulation; assess the whole product. |
| In supplement ingredients | Information about an ingested ingredient and its amount per dose. |

For supplements, check the recommended dose, full composition and warnings. For cosmetics, also consider the instructions and skin tolerance. The result of a combined product cannot automatically be attributed to elastin alone.
Which Swedish Collagen products contain the most declared elastin?
The following comparison lists the declared amount of elastin per daily dose for formulations where it is specified in the supplied product information.
| Product | Elastin | Other selected details |
|---|---|---|

What does this mean for your routine?
Do not start by asking how many different beauty ingredients you can combine. First identify your need: dryness, sensitivity, a change in texture or choosing a specific product.

Frequently asked questions
Is elastin the same protein as collagen?
No. Elastin is mainly associated with elastic recoil, while collagen provides tissue strength and support.
Is elastin found only in skin?
No. It is also present in the lungs, large blood vessels and other tissues.
Is knowing the amount of elastin in skin enough?
No. The organisation and function of elastic fibres also matter.
Does elastin in the ingredients automatically mean firmer skin?
No. An ingredient declaration alone does not prove the result of a finished product.
Which Swedish Collagen has the most declared elastin?
In the supplied information, MAX and Meno/MenoPlus each contain 50 mg of elastin per daily dose. GOLD and Marine Collagen 12,500 mg each contain 10 mg. This compares declared amounts, not effectiveness.
Where can I compare specific collagen supplements?
The table above compares declared elastin amounts in selected products. Check the current label of the specific pack for the full ingredients.
