How to use a facial beauty device: steps, gel, serum and modes

What should you apply under the treatment head, how should you prepare your skin, and in what order should you use the programmes? This guide helps you plan an at-home routine according to your device's instructions.

There is no single procedure for every facial beauty device. The choice of cosmetics, head movement, duration and frequency depend on the specific model and selected mode.

1. How to prepare your skin and device

First, check your model's name and find its instructions. Similar-looking treatment heads do not necessarily have the same controls or require the same procedure.

  1. Read the restrictions on use. Check the permitted treatment areas, contraindications and instructions for the selected programme.
  2. Prepare the device. The head should be clean and undamaged, and the device ready to operate according to its instructions.
  3. Remove makeup and gently cleanse your skin. Remove any remaining cleanser according to its directions.
  4. Prepare the cosmetics for the selected mode. The instructions specify whether your skin should be dry, damp or covered with a contact product.
A cleansing programme is not a compulsory first step in every session. Use a cotton pad, retaining ring or cleansing foam with the head only if the specific model and mode allow it.

2. What should you use under the device: gel, serum or cream?

Use the contact product recommended for your device and programme. The name “hyaluronic serum” alone does not confirm suitability for an electrical, ultrasonic or RF treatment head.

Cosmetics must meet the requirements of the specific technology. A product suitable for one mode may not be suitable for another.

On smaller screens, scroll the table sideways.

What to check when choosing cosmetics for use with a device
Mode Product selection What to watch for
Galvanic A product explicitly suitable for the selected galvanic programme. If the instructions distinguish between polarities, the product must match the selected polarity.
Microcurrent A contact or conductive product specified in the instructions. An ordinary serum does not automatically replace the recommended gel.
EMS A product specified by the manufacturer for the EMS head or roller. Do not copy the procedure or settings from another microcurrent device.
Ultrasonic head A contact product approved for that use. Instructions for a flat treatment head and a cleansing spatula may differ.
RF A product recommended for the specific RF model. Suitability cannot be determined solely by the presence of hyaluronic acid.
Standalone LED light Prepare your skin according to the instructions for the light mode. Not every light programme requires conductive gel. For a combined mode, consider the other active functions as well.

How much product should you apply?

Follow the amounts specified in the device instructions and on the product packaging. The number of pump presses is not a universal measure because applicators and treatment areas vary.

If the contact layer dries during use, pause the device and renew it as described in the instructions. Adding water may not be permitted for every gel and device.

Do not substitute cream or oil for contact gel without confirmation of compatibility. Include them in your finishing routine according to your skin's tolerance and the product directions.

3. An at-home routine, step by step

This overview helps you organise a session. Follow your model's instructions for specific settings and the order of combined programmes.

  1. Choose a programme. Decide which permitted mode you will use today. You do not need to use every function of the device.
  2. Prepare your skin. Remove makeup, cleanse and adjust skin moisture according to the selected programme.
  3. Apply a suitable product. If the programme requires one, follow the specified amount and application method.
  4. Set up the device. For first use, select the starting setting recommended by the manufacturer.
  5. Use only on permitted areas. Follow the specified contact, movement, pressure and duration.
  6. Finish the programme. Do not automatically repeat another cycle simply because the device has switched off.
  7. Complete your aftercare. Remove or leave on the contact product according to its directions, and clean the device.
The sequence “cleansing → RF → EMS → LED” is not a universal rule. Some devices combine functions automatically; others have separate programmes or restrict how they can be combined.

4. How to move the head and use the modes

Contact without excessive pressure

Position the head or electrodes as shown in the instructions. Do not apply extra pressure as a way to increase the effect.

Movement according to the diagram

Some programmes use continuous strokes; others require precisely timed holds. Do not automatically apply one technique to every mode.

Holding the device correctly

If the model requires your hand to touch a conductive area on the handle, hold it as instructed. This requirement does not apply to every device.

Only designated areas

Use the device around the eyes, on the lips or on the neck only to the extent explicitly permitted for that head and programme.

What does a programme name mean?

Labels such as CLEAN, MOISTURE, LIFT and SONIC vary between manufacturers. The name “moisturising mode” does not tell you whether the device uses ultrasound, galvanic current or another function. Look for the precise explanation in the instructions.

For an ultrasonic spatula, the angle and orientation of the blade also matter. See the separate article on how to use the EXCLUSIVE ultrasonic skin scrubber.

5. How long and how often should you use the device?

The specific model's instructions determine session duration, frequency and any required breaks. Guidance for one device cannot be used as a recommendation for the entire category.

  • Distinguish between the duration of one programme, time per area and total session duration.
  • Automatic shut-off is not an instruction to restart immediately.
  • If the manufacturer provides an initial and a maintenance schedule, follow the relevant phase.
  • Do not compensate for a missed session by doubling the duration or intensity.
First use: follow the starting settings and any tolerance test specified by the manufacturer. Without supporting instructions, a universal rule such as “three minutes” or “three times a week” cannot be established.

6. What to do after a session
  1. Switch off the device. Before cleaning, follow the manufacturer's instructions, including disconnecting the power supply where required.
  2. Complete your skincare. Some contact gels should be removed; others can be left on. Follow their directions.
  3. Choose your aftercare products. Use products suitable after that session. There is no need to automatically layer an ampoule, serum, eye cream and oil.
  4. Clean the head. Use the recommended method and allow the device to dry before storing it.

Do not immerse the device in water or rinse it unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that cleaning method. Do not use alcohol or another disinfectant that could damage the surface without checking compatibility.

7. Common mistakes and restrictions

Unsuitable products

Replacing the specified gel with cream, oil or an unverified serum may conflict with the instructions.

Sessions that are too long

Repeating cycles or adding further modes without the manufacturer's instructions is not an appropriate way to improve results.

Copying another model

A video for a similar-looking device may not show the correct procedure for your model.

Ignoring your skin's reaction

Stop the session if you experience pain, burning or an unusual reaction. Do not try to overcome discomfort by increasing the intensity.

When should you check suitability first?

Read the complete list of contraindications before use. If you have a pacemaker or another electronic implant, do not use electrical modes without checking suitability with your treating doctor and following the manufacturer's instructions. Also check suitability during pregnancy, with a skin condition or after a recent aesthetic procedure.

8. Frequently asked questions about using facial beauty devices
Can I use any hyaluronic serum?

Not automatically. Hyaluronic acid content alone does not confirm suitability for a specific device. Check that the product is compatible with the selected mode.

Do I have to use every mode in sequence?

No. Use only the combinations and order permitted in the instructions. More programmes in one session do not automatically make a better routine.

What if the gel dries during use?

Pause the device. Renew the contact layer according to the instructions for the device and gel. Add water only if the relevant instructions allow it.

Can I use the device every day?

Only if the instructions for the specific model and mode permit it. Follow the recommended intervals and stop using it if irritation occurs.

Can I treat the eye area?

Only with a device, head and programme explicitly intended for that area. Permission to use a device around the eyes does not mean it may be applied to the eyelids or directly to the eye.

Should I apply face cream before or after using the device?

If the programme requires contact gel, do not replace it with an ordinary cream. Apply your finishing cream after the session according to the instructions and your skin's reaction.

Where can I find the procedure for my model?

In the original instructions supplied with the device and on the relevant product page. If the instructions are missing, ask the seller for the version matching the exact model before using it.
