Guide: Mushrooms and Their Composition

Mushrooms and their composition: reishi, cordyceps and blends
A single mushroom or a blend of several species? Compare the source material, extract form, amount per daily serving and other ingredients. This overview covers individual mushroom supplements and nutraceutical formulas containing mushroom extracts.
Start with the specific source material
Check the species, the part used and the amount. A single extract, an eight-mushroom blend and a formula with vitamins are different products. This guide compares ingredients; it is not a recommendation to take all five products together.
What do the label details mean?
Fruiting body and mycelium: mycelium is the network of fungal filaments. It is different from the fruiting body, so these descriptions are not interchangeable.
Powder and extract: check which form the manufacturer specifies. Milligram amounts alone do not allow a direct comparison of different source materials.
Extraction ratio and standardisation: a 10 : 1 ratio does not state the percentage of beta-glucans or establish a tenfold effect. Do not infer beta-glucan content from total polysaccharide content. Compare separately declared, documented values.

The same mushroom may appear in several formulas. Reishi appears on its own, in Mushroom Complex 8 and in KingManPro. Cordyceps appears on its own, in the mushroom blend and in KINGendoPRO. Consider differences between source materials and your total daily intake.
Look beyond the mushrooms. With complex formulas, also check vitamins, minerals, enzymes, allergens and warnings. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about suitability if receiving treatment or if you have a health condition.
Follow the label on your pack. Observe the recommended intake and storage instructions. Comparing amounts is not a recommendation to increase your serving.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fruiting body the same as mycelium?
No. They are different parts of a fungus. In this overview, the standalone Reishi contains a fruiting body extract, while the standalone Cordyceps contains fermented mycelium extract.
Does a 10 : 1 extract mean a tenfold effect?
No. An extraction ratio is not a measure of a health effect or a statement of beta-glucan percentage. Also compare source material, processing and the specific ingredient specification.
Does Mushroom Complex 8 contain 500 mg of each mushroom?
No. Each capsule contains a total of 500 mg of eight extracts: Phellinus and chaga at 160 mg each, and the other six at 30 mg each.
Are all mushroom capsules vegan?
No. Mushroom Complex 8 has an animal-derived gelatine capsule. For other products, check the complete ingredients and the manufacturer’s declaration, not just the capsule shell.
Should I take several mushroom products together?
Not automatically. First compare the entire formulas, overlapping ingredients and warnings. Seek individual professional advice if taking medicines or if you have an illness.
Do you claim mushroom benefits for immunity, memory or sleep?
This guide describes mushrooms by their composition, part used and declared amounts. It does not attribute health effects or the treatment or prevention of disease to them.
