Ayurvedic and Herbal Supplements: Which Should You Choose?

Ashwagandha, shatavari, tulsi or boswellia? This guide compares raw materials, powders and extracts, quantities per daily serving and pack sizes. It also includes a mushroom extract, shilajit and other materials that are not all Ayurvedic plants.

What to compare

Start with the ingredient name and the plant part used. Then compare the processing form, quantity per capsule and recommended daily serving, full ingredients including the capsule shell, and number of capsules per pack. The colour of a product range is a visual identifier, not a quality rating.

Powder, extract and DER

Plant powders and extracts are different processing forms. A powder is made by grinding the raw material; an extract is obtained by extraction. For extracts, check the plant part, DER, extraction solvent and standardisation where stated.

DER describes the ratio of starting material to the resulting extract. A ratio of 10 : 1 alone does not state the amount of a specific compound or make all extracts comparable. Calculations require knowing whether the ratio refers to the native extract or a preparation containing carriers.

Understanding quantities

Milligrams of an extract are not automatically milligrams of its individual compounds. For example, 1,000 mg of grape skin extract does not mean 1,000 mg of resveratrol. The turmeric and pepper figure is the combined quantity of both ingredients; the berberine entry states the mass of the hydrochloride. Look for the declared amount of a specific compound on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher number mean a better product?

Quantity alone is not enough for comparison. Compare the same raw material, plant part, processing form and ingredient information.

Is DER the same as standardisation?

No. DER describes the ratio of raw material to extract. Standardisation states a defined content of a particular compound or group of compounds.

How long does a pack last?

Divide the capsule count by the recommended number per day. At two capsules daily, 120 capsules last 60 days and 60 capsules last 30 days. Follow the label.

Are all the products listed plants?

No. Reishi is a mushroom, and shilajit is a natural material distinct from plant powder. The comparison therefore covers several ingredient categories.

Important information

Follow the recommended serving and warnings on the current label. Food supplements do not replace a varied, balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle. Keep out of reach of young children. If you take medication, have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss suitability with a doctor or pharmacist.
