Erythritol is a substitute sweetener naturally occurring in many types of fruit, which is also used as a sugar substitute to sweeten many food products. If you are trying to reduce your calorie intake, it might be the right way to flavor your food or drinks.

The main advantage of using erythritol is its low, or zero, calorie content. If you are trying to lose weight, maintain your figure, or simply reduce your intake of carbohydrates or calories, replacing sugar with this sweetener should definitely help you. One teaspoon of sugar weighing 10 grams has, for comparison, about 40 calories.

One of the other benefits of sweetening with erythritol is the fact that it does not metabolize with bacteria in the mouth, so unlike regular sugar, it does not contribute to tooth decay. In addition, erythritol has a zero glycemic index and does not affect blood sugar or insulin levels.

However, the use of erythritol also has one disadvantage. Its sweetness is lower compared to table sugar. Specifically, depending on the manufacturer, the stated sweetness is approximately 65-70% sugar. So if you want to get the same sweetening effect, you'll need to use more of it than you would with regular sugar. Also, erythritol should not be used as a complete substitute for sugar, as its excessive consumption can cause digestive problems in sensitive people.

Erythritol is a healthy sugar substitute with low calories and zero glycemic index. Birch sugar (xylitol) can also be an interesting alternative, which is healthier than regular sugar, but still contains a relatively large amount of calories.
