UVA light: Treatment of various dermatological complications using ultraviolet-A (UVA) light therapy is common practice in many clinical settings. Antimicrobial properties of UVA light have also been observed in several preclinical studies. In this context, studies have shown that exposure of transfected human tracheal cells to UVA light leads to the activation of the mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS), which in turn reduces the expression of the viral spike protein and restores the proliferation of infected cells.
In the current study, researchers investigated the level of safety and therapy. This is the first human study of its kind to evaluate the safety and efficacy profiles of internally applied UVA light for the treatment of critical illness. The findings show that UVA therapy is safe for humans and highly effective in reducing viral load and disease severity.
